VIDEO: Indian Daredevils and the Well of Death

The ‘circle of death’ is neither new nor shocking, but it’s one thing to see a professional stuntman who follows the necessary safety precautions doing it and another a group of gifted but nevertheless amateur daredevils going at it in a shoddy well made out of wooden planks with the crowd only inches away….

Spectacular sunrise at Pondicherry, India with Asa.

Boston skyline at sunset while walking on some bridge, Boston, USA

I am incredibly privileged. No more whining.

Incredible India

It's 12:30am in Singapore but only 10pm in India, I can't sleep. Still operating on Indian time aye. Tomorrow begins my five-day course for graduate students, I should really sleep, but I thought blogging is as good a way to wait for slumber as tossing and turning and thinking of blogging. Much more productive this way.

India. Such an attack on the senses - a deliciously bizarre smorgasbord of sights, sounds, smells and tastes- here I recall Yuen saying, India is anything but mediocre. So it was. (Not mediocre, I mean.) But one can't just blog that India is "not mediocre" and just leave it as it is. It is too broad, and it would be doing India injustice. I wanted to describe India my way. I decided that if I were to use one word to describe India, it would be "extravagant".

India is extravagantly colourful, extravagantly loud, extravagantly spicy, extravagantly interesting. Sometimes over the top, sometimes crazy, but always exciting. For better or worse, and entirely up to the individual to judge. I like it. I like how the traffic functions perfectly with no rules, only a lot of horn-beeping, I like how all the sides to a thali (a.k.a. banana leaf rice) have diversely different tastes but all blend in together with no problem, I like the sight of gossiping women huddled in a whirl of beautiful sari colours. The random bulls straying along the sidewalk, the sudden smell of sweet jasmine amidst the smell of gasoline, the pedestrian crossings that lead to dead ends. The 330 million gods, each governing a different jurisdiction, each formidable with an interesting story behind.

Sure, I almost got my facial features wiped off by an autorickshaw that brushed by me by a hair. I am peppered with bug bites, all over my limbs and pretty much everywhere that shows, and I have rashes from the heat in Tamil Nadu. I haven't slept well in three days, caused by said afflictions, and I've caused my parents eight apprehensive nights because I was conned by a so-called international sim card, which did not work, causing a semi-communication breakdown. But it was all worth it.

Already the memories are fading. I really want to chronicle everything, from the instance we touched down in the impressive airport of Bangalore with a drunk Chinese backpacker, to the minute that we arrived at Singapore and got struck by Singapore's acute blandness in comparison. I don't want to give spoilers of travel posts in India that may come, but I have also to be realistic that there is too little time, and the posts may not actually materialize. I still need to sleep, eat, excrete, perform my scholarly duties, and continue to plan for my next big trip. The States. Next next Tuesday.

So here's to say that India was a wonderful experience if I don't get to blog more about it - although we only had eight days, like a local we spoke to said - "it is just not enough. You can see nothing. Nothing." But I'd like to think that we scraped the tip of the iceberg. Figuratively speaking, of course, as the heat rashes on my neck would testify.

1:30am. Back to waiting for slumber, tossing and turning, but thinking less about blogging ;)

Meltdown sikit

OK We're finally in July. I'm finally in the battle zone that I've been looking at afar from June, speculating about the craziness but never actually registering that with every passing day, the dates come closer. I am at the point where I finally see, that I am going to be the person carrying out my haphazardly engineered back-to-back schedule for the following three months - and it is not going to be pretty.

Right now you're looking at a deer staring into the headlights of an oncoming truck named Self-Inflicted Stress.

There's so many thoughts in my head, all not related to each other, some research, some travel, some homelessness, a fair bit of homelessness actually, and all the hell that is spawned from these sources. OK to put it in perspective:

July
7/7
Leave Singapore for KL after putting my whole room into boxes. Which is something that I should do from right now.
8/7 - 11/7
In KL. Running errands (India visa, ISIC card, shopping for formal wear, somehow fix my hair), multiple gatherings (Asa, LL, XiaoCi, my NZ Aunt).
12/7
Return to Singapore with my World's Greatest Parents and move everything to Jia Ling's place.
13/7 - 17/7
Some graduate forum. Whole-day affairs. I'm presenting a paper. Which means that I need to prepare for my paper as well.
17/7 - 25/7
India. Haven't got CSers for Bangalore yet. I am nervous. Also I think India's going to be really intense, and at this point it looks intimidating. Thanks to my mum who was collecting horror stories in attempt to dissuade me from going. We'll be covering Bangalore, Mysore, Chennai and Pondicherry.
27/7 - 31/7
Some course for graduate students. Also whole-day affairs. Right after India. Have to adjust my mind straight after I come back.

August
1/8 - 3/8
Prep for US
4/8
Flight to Boston. Reach Boston at 10:30pm.
5/8 - 8/8
Conference. Presenting paper on the 6th. Need to prepare some kind of poster session. Have no idea how it's going to be like.
9/8 - 13/8
Bus to New York from Boston. Bunk at Kingston's, meet up with XC and Jian Hui. Probably the only relaxed part of my trip to the US.
13/8 - 20/8
Research week at San Francisco where I try to talk to people. I haven't planned it yet. My theoretical framework, my interview questions, my EVERYTHING. Kill me now please.
21/8 - 30/8
Camping Part 1 - Going with the Green Tortoise for its Canyons of the West trip, covering Las Vegas, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon NP, Arches NP, Monument Valley, Lake Powell, Grand Canyon NP.

September
1/9 - 7/9
Camping Part 2 - Burning Man. Also going with Green Tortoise. Intense desert camping, but at least I'll have someone to take care of my food and water and transport. Highlight of my trip. And I am still bloody scared.
9/9
Arrive in Singapore. Back. Finally. Start to look for a new room. Move house from Jia Ling's, as soon as possible. This will take me at least 2 weeks. At least. But can't mooch off Jia Ling's hospitality too much.

OK Siao onot. Two months, four countries. (And check all that KL-Singapore-India-Singapore action.) The panic has kicked in, and according to past experience, action will kick in soon after, but I'm at that paralyzed stage where I need extra push from panic to get away from the inertia, and then the two months will fly by. The details of the plans still have to be executed, and I have to come up with some extensive to-do list, extensive packing list, extensive people-to-bother list.

I like lists. I now have a list of lists. This should be heaven for me. AAAARrrrggggh the truck's gonna hit me!!!!

Adrenaline rush, danger danger danger. Then after moving have to get my confirmation report ready, as my goal is to complete it by the end of this year. October, November, December. 2009 will then be gone, we'll be one decade into the 2000's, and climate change effects are going to happen even more frequently, and we're all going to die!!!!!!!

Shhhhh. Everything's going to be ok. Shhhhhh.

One way ticket to India

Was in the middle of an air ticket transaction when my debit card was declined (probably due to lack of funds). So now Asa and I are proud owners of two one-way tickets to India. We will probably have to turn lesbians and set up a family underground there while pretending to be sisters. Since that's what you do when you buy one-way tickets to India. No?

I've decided to return to Singapore on Monday. The very thought of it weighs me down, sigh. After the trip back from Singapore last week I haven't done any work (for one whole week! the horror!) so it is time for me to go back and pay my dues.

There's also a very real possibility that I may have to move again, because my landlord is a creep. When I was in KL he opened my locked door, to "spot-check", WTF. He has also stated through email that he will continue doing that until he can trust us and we can "give him confidence", and it is his responsibility to ensure that we all "live in harmony and safety and enjoy our stay". (Does this sound familiar to anyone?) I am NOT bloody living in a hostel, and he's NOT my bloody hostel matron. As far as the tenancy agreement is concerned he does not have the right to do that, and I might seek legal recourse.

Though according to this page, Singapore is pro-landlord and there is no comprehensive law dealing with landlord and tenant relations. Then there's this forum page where the landlady went through the tenant's garbage (found a used condom and forfeited his deposit coz she accused him of bringing girls back but the guy was just masturbating with the condom) and his belongings occasionally. There's no solution in the threads, but some comments are just ridiculous.

"If I'm not mistaken, there is no invasion of privacy here. The flat belongs to the owners and I know some of them will check the room (but won't tell you that they do) in order to ensure there is no drugs / illegal substance."

WTFFFF RAGE NO INVASION OF PRIVACY?? "To ensure there is no drugs/illegal activities" is exactly the same reason given by my Creepy Landlord - and I am furious about it - because I paid good money to rent a personal space, not to be policed, and what about the flip side? I.e. who's going to be responsible if my belongings go missing, or if I am assaulted in my own locked room?

OK deep breaths. Chill. That's why la I think I will have to move. It's a pity because my housemates seem to be nice people, but I cannot live in a panopticon, and my situation now reminds me so much of Singapore in general that it's not even funny.

Have to detoxify my brain with all the hate and rage within. Indiaaaaaaaaaaaa. Bostonnnnnnnnn. Ohmmmmmm.

Super disoriented.

This week I'm only spending two nights on my KL bed - Sunday night in Northam Hotel, Penang; Monday night at home; Tuesday and Wednesday night on KTM; tonight at home; Friday and Saturday night in the wild camping =)

*hugs self*

I know I have lots to do but right now I'm so disoriented from getting back to KL 6am this morning that I've resorted to... watching police-themed HK dramas, which probably does not help any. I've got stuff to blog about and they're all swimming in my head, no thanks to the thick HK drama plot and adrenaline-inducing action scenes (damn them).

Emails to reply, emails to reply. I watched Sell Out! last week and I thought it was commendable and I wanted to blog about it - but that slipped away before I could and suddenly I was in Penang. In Penang I watched a documentary in the hotel about planets and the universe and was really intrigued - wanted to blog about that, and also the fact that I hadn't been in a decent hotel for so long and hadn't seen Melissa Sim for so long and the Penang orgasmic foooooooood but then I was rumbling along the train tracks from KL to Singapore.

Intermittently I also wanted to blog about these nasty bug bites that I've got on my ankles and my calves, I don't know what bit me but the bites are itchy, swollen and manifest in angry red five-cent spots of busted capillaries. In moments of commuting idleness I wondered if I could put a leech on the bite and somehow neutralize it. I'm still wondering.

In Singapore I ran about running errands, saw my co-supervisor and practically binned my grant application draft (demolition, ground zero, deep breath and here we go again). Oh yeah how could I forget?

I AM GOING TO BOSTON IN AUGUST =D

When I first got the news I wanted to tell someone who could understand the importance of this to me. Picked up my phone and realized that there was no one. At the end I broke the news to a couple of my colleagues and got the same level of congratulations that I would give to a random colleague who just got accepted for an overseas conference. Sigh.

Oh yeah - sometime last week I also got the news that my homosexuality and films paper got accepted into another conference held in New Delhi, but I'm going to be stuck in Singapore for another forum at the same period of time so no New Delhi for me. I haven't even bought the ticket to India yet, the trip with Asa, it's been such a busy period of time that I keep putting it off, and that is keeping my parents on tenterhooks because they're trying their best to dissuade me from going in light of the swine flu situation. I don't know yet.

To chronicle my current turmoil of activity, firstly I have a deadline to meet and that's on 24th May and since I'd be busy dodging leeches (or actively seeking them out muahahaha) then somewhere in Ulu Terong, Perak, the deadline will be rolled forward to... tomorrow. Holy macaroni. Ground zero grant application and rewrite of another paper for a graduate forum in July, both deadlines on June 15. First year report deadline July 3rd. Amidst all the deadlines I have to plan for my trip to Boston which I am planning to stretch way longer than 3 days. For research-related crazy schemes of course.

Visa, tickets, couchsurfing... blah. somehow not in a crazy scheme mood.

While travelling this time around, from Singapore to KL and from KL to Penang - snippets of the travelling I did last year kept resurfacing. Camp fire in Cameron Highlands with Val (who subsequently got diarrhoea hahaha); the Jelapang Toll with the impossibly clean toilet when me and Asa went hitchhiking; the beautiful views of the northern forests and mountain range while road tripping with YKent and GuangHong; running for the bus while meeting Robert in Malacca. I love this country man. And I miss all my friends.

Suddenly emo. Woi camping trip tomorrow! Going Boston in August! 12noon already. I think I should go take a nap.

The morning after.

I wanted to blog yesterday, but I could only think of one sentence -

Pagi ini saya menduduki peperiksaan yang terakhir dalam hayat saya, dengan sambilewa.

And if I were to pad it up a bit, it would look a bit like this:

Pagi ini saya menduduki peperiksaan yang terakhir dalam hayat saya, dengan sambilewa. Sambilewa! Sambilewa! Sambilewa! Yo yo yo! Sambilewa!

But still that's only two lines so I thought I wouldn't waste the space anyhow. This blog has better things to talk about than pseudo rapping in Malay.

Raining outside! Accompanied by Blackmore's Nights, in my unlit office, with a piping hot mug of Chinese tea - ah, perfect ambiance. Chatting with LL also. I have lots to do today, I need to make a list, but I'm just chilling a bit till... I don't know. Till I stop chilling I guess. Sambilewa! Sambilewa! Sambilewa!

I'm going out tonight with some Master's students, ladies' night, and tomorrow I'm going back to KL. I finally read something of Salman Rushdie yesterday (right after exam I went to the HSS library and borrowed an armful of fiction), Haroun and The Sea of Stories, and it was pretty good, I finished it by this morning.

I almost typed "today morning", which irritates the hell out of Kukui. Actually I had never thought that "today morning" was wrong until he pointed it out. I guess it's the language influence from Mandarin (今天早上), but then if you see it in Malay it is "pagi ini", which translates to "morning this". Morning this, bitch! (Was just testing if it sounded like an insult. It does.)

The next book up is Alan Bennett's The Clothes They Stood Up In and The Lady In The Van, a thin book of two stories, I started reading it a little already when on the loo, and it looks very promising indeed. The first story is about how this couple returns from the opera and find their flat stripped bare, like totally bare, of ALL of their possessions. The fur coats, the pie in the oven along with the oven, the toilet paper... everything. Then I ended my loo session, but I'm sure I will finish the book on the way back to KL.

Oh yeah, Chindi, Snow White and the Seven Samurai by Tom Holt was rather disappointing. I didn't like it much because I thought the storyline was rather chaotic and the theme wasn't very original, like it was trying to emulate The Matrix but with fairy tales. And not elegantly done too. Some details were clever and sometimes laugh-out-loud, but the overall plot was just too haphazardly thrown together. I finished the book but that was only because I had nothing else to do on the loo.

So anyway, a list of what I need to do today, so that it would inspire me to get off my lazy ass and start.
  1. Renew library books
  2. Get money from ATM
  3. Reply some emails
  4. Attend to one admin thing
  5. Print map to bus terminal back to KL
  6. Send a paper to my supervisors
  7. Laundry
  8. Pack my bag before going out tonight so I can party late and wake up at an ungodly hour of 7am tomorrow (only to be awfully early - but that's a better alternative to being late, given my extremely off the mark ability to estimate timing) to the bus station
So the month of May will be spent going to and fro KL and Singapore, I'm moving in my new place officially at 11th May (the last legal day I am permitted to stay in Graduate Hall), then go back KL again. Then at some point when I am tired of KL (T_T or when guilt motivates me to come back, more likely), stick around in Singapore till mid July when a crazy stretch of activities will be unleashed:
  • 13-17 July - Some Forum in Singapore (don't want people to end up here by googling)
  • 17-25 July - Indiaaaaaaaa
  • 27-31 July - Some Course in Singapore
  • August - Don't know if Boston conference will be on or not, if yes... nyehehehehe... crazy plans to be conceived later, but fingers crossed for the moment!! (waves away jinxes!!)
Coming up, to revise paper for submitting to Some Forum, and do extensive extensive extensive reading to buff up my theoretical foundation for my thesis, for I have no more coursework to fall back onto or blame, research work goes full speed ahead! Can't say I'm sorry about that though.

Also I have this craving for Penang food. I'm not talking about the Penang food in Canteen 2, which I have not stooped down to yet. A trip to Penang may be in order. O jiannnnnn.

I think I should probably end this post here. 2 hours later and I've still not done anything useful. Such is the life of a PhD student who has had the last test of her life.

Indiaaaaaaaaa

So I'm superbly excited about our trip to India. Tentatively it will be from 18th July till 25th July, sandwiched between two time slots that I have to be in Singapore, but that's the best time for Asa and I, so a week it is. We are planning to take Tiger Airways to Chennai, get a train to Bangalore and fly back from Bangalore. Tentative plan lah.

Result of travel fueled adrenaline - 1:30am already still wide awake o_O I was lepaking half of yesterday and whole of today as well, totally not caring about my Tuesday test, nyehh... Tuesday still far away... anyway, ended up just reading up information about Chennai and Bangalore in the office, pestering good ol' Asa who was supposed to be working, with train schedules and random tidbits of Chennai and Bangalore.

For instance, did you know that the cheapest theatre in India is in Bangalore, where you can watch plays and stuff for RM3-RM7? WTFFF cheaaaappppp for live performance! And did you know that Bangalore was called The Town of Boiled Beans (Benda Kaale Uru in Kannada), boiled beans! hahahaha (OK no offense to Indians out there anywhere, I'm just so hyper happy now that I will just laugh at anything, even at German jokes hahahaha)

Chennai also has so many interesting things bursting with culture, such as Auroville (which seems to be like a commune of sorts), Cholamandal Artists Village, a thriving Tamil film industry which is known as Kollywood! Wahahahahaha! I am so tickled about it I'm not even sure why (apart from being hyper happy).

And finally I shall be able to go buy some Indian wear, I like the salwar which is something like a long tunic/skirt worn with pants, I've been seeing my Indian colleagues wearing them, they seem very comfortable and pretty! Though with my totally Chinese face I might look weird in them... but don't care lah XD

Trying to slot everything in, with more than 2 months to prepare and to do extensive research (exhausting all my Indian contacts and will be establishing new ones through CS). Asa was mentioning that I have many Indian contacts. As in, Indian Indian (as opposed to Malaysian Indian or Singaporean Indian etc.). Let me see, from the top of my head -
  1. Nandakishor-you're-always-late, old Greenpeace pal
  2. Kiran The Martial Arts Champion, also another Greenpeace pal
  3. Kokil, one of the research students whom I went out once with
  4. Blooma, another research student whom I asked about the salwar (research students have office space btw, and they're all my office neighbours)
  5. Tejas - this CS guy who randomly contacted me through CS asking about traveling in Malaysia - and I just found out by chance through forum discussions that he is right now in Chennai! Must force him to return the favour, and CS rocks!!!
  6. This Other Indian Girl - a project officer on my floor who's from Chennai as well. Can't remember her name.
  7. Sidhu, from Mumbai whom I met quite randomly while asking for directions on the road to the Singaporean train station
  8. Nandan my future housemate
  9. Nandan's wife my future housemate #2
  10. My future housemate #3 who's also from India (all housemates count because by July I'd have known them already)
  11. Suruchi, one of the Master's students who co-wrote my Homosexuality and Films paper.
  12. Namrata, another Master's student. We're going out to party after Tuesday's paper.
  13. Hyacinths, another Master's student whom I worked with recently as a receptionist in one of the events that our school was hosting... my versatile PhD skills include smiling brilliantly at foreign diplomats and pointing them to the direction of the event.
Can't think of more now. Still damn happy. 2am already =_= I love planning trips, I love putting all the things together to form a seamless plan, no right answer, just the most optimal answer. And I love trawling through wikis and CS forums to find interesting things to do, getting maps of the place, figuring transport connections, highlighting quirky stuff to see, things that we must eat...

Damn. Tired already. Zzz.

It was decided within 10 mins
