Kristy will rue the day...

... she told me Tiger Airways had a promotion: $1 INSANE All In Fare!!!

I went berserk. I swear I was unconscious for a bit and when I came to I had:
Nov12-13 Return air tickets to/from Penang
Feb25-March2 Return air tickets to/from KL
March13-March20 Return air tickets to/from Kuching (going with Jia Ling)

And it cost me.... *drumrollllllll*

*still drumming*

wait for it, wait for it....

SGD36 (RM87.41) for ALL SIX FLIGHTS!!! To put this slightly into perspective, my taxi ride from Woodlands back home yesterday cost me SGD18. So if I were to take a taxi back, from my home, to Woodlands, just for the heck of it, I would actually have spent the equal amount on the six flights which total distance is approximately 3081kms. I honestly wouldn't mind forfeiting any of the tickets.

I am a little guilty about all the carbon emissions that I'm going to cause, but still, they're so cheap T_T and I was barely conscious, I swear!

In other flight-related news, this morning I also booked a ticket from Singapore to Boston, flying United Airlines, under a student price of USD790 which according to some is a pretty decent price. This will be reimbursed but I'm celebrating in the name of frugality and auntie-ness!

I've just realized - amidst all the excitement, I've forgotten to buy me and Asa's return tickets from India XD but I'm maxxed out on Tiger Airways. I will keep away from it for today at least. It's bloody evil I tell you.

Damn have to return to work, been doing nothing but book tickets this morning T_T

*update*
Just found RM24 in my jeans pocket. Have no idea how it got there. Today is such a good day. =D

Super disoriented.

This week I'm only spending two nights on my KL bed - Sunday night in Northam Hotel, Penang; Monday night at home; Tuesday and Wednesday night on KTM; tonight at home; Friday and Saturday night in the wild camping =)

*hugs self*

I know I have lots to do but right now I'm so disoriented from getting back to KL 6am this morning that I've resorted to... watching police-themed HK dramas, which probably does not help any. I've got stuff to blog about and they're all swimming in my head, no thanks to the thick HK drama plot and adrenaline-inducing action scenes (damn them).

Emails to reply, emails to reply. I watched Sell Out! last week and I thought it was commendable and I wanted to blog about it - but that slipped away before I could and suddenly I was in Penang. In Penang I watched a documentary in the hotel about planets and the universe and was really intrigued - wanted to blog about that, and also the fact that I hadn't been in a decent hotel for so long and hadn't seen Melissa Sim for so long and the Penang orgasmic foooooooood but then I was rumbling along the train tracks from KL to Singapore.

Intermittently I also wanted to blog about these nasty bug bites that I've got on my ankles and my calves, I don't know what bit me but the bites are itchy, swollen and manifest in angry red five-cent spots of busted capillaries. In moments of commuting idleness I wondered if I could put a leech on the bite and somehow neutralize it. I'm still wondering.

In Singapore I ran about running errands, saw my co-supervisor and practically binned my grant application draft (demolition, ground zero, deep breath and here we go again). Oh yeah how could I forget?

I AM GOING TO BOSTON IN AUGUST =D

When I first got the news I wanted to tell someone who could understand the importance of this to me. Picked up my phone and realized that there was no one. At the end I broke the news to a couple of my colleagues and got the same level of congratulations that I would give to a random colleague who just got accepted for an overseas conference. Sigh.

Oh yeah - sometime last week I also got the news that my homosexuality and films paper got accepted into another conference held in New Delhi, but I'm going to be stuck in Singapore for another forum at the same period of time so no New Delhi for me. I haven't even bought the ticket to India yet, the trip with Asa, it's been such a busy period of time that I keep putting it off, and that is keeping my parents on tenterhooks because they're trying their best to dissuade me from going in light of the swine flu situation. I don't know yet.

To chronicle my current turmoil of activity, firstly I have a deadline to meet and that's on 24th May and since I'd be busy dodging leeches (or actively seeking them out muahahaha) then somewhere in Ulu Terong, Perak, the deadline will be rolled forward to... tomorrow. Holy macaroni. Ground zero grant application and rewrite of another paper for a graduate forum in July, both deadlines on June 15. First year report deadline July 3rd. Amidst all the deadlines I have to plan for my trip to Boston which I am planning to stretch way longer than 3 days. For research-related crazy schemes of course.

Visa, tickets, couchsurfing... blah. somehow not in a crazy scheme mood.

While travelling this time around, from Singapore to KL and from KL to Penang - snippets of the travelling I did last year kept resurfacing. Camp fire in Cameron Highlands with Val (who subsequently got diarrhoea hahaha); the Jelapang Toll with the impossibly clean toilet when me and Asa went hitchhiking; the beautiful views of the northern forests and mountain range while road tripping with YKent and GuangHong; running for the bus while meeting Robert in Malacca. I love this country man. And I miss all my friends.

Suddenly emo. Woi camping trip tomorrow! Going Boston in August! 12noon already. I think I should go take a nap.

The morning after.

I wanted to blog yesterday, but I could only think of one sentence -

Pagi ini saya menduduki peperiksaan yang terakhir dalam hayat saya, dengan sambilewa.

And if I were to pad it up a bit, it would look a bit like this:

Pagi ini saya menduduki peperiksaan yang terakhir dalam hayat saya, dengan sambilewa. Sambilewa! Sambilewa! Sambilewa! Yo yo yo! Sambilewa!

But still that's only two lines so I thought I wouldn't waste the space anyhow. This blog has better things to talk about than pseudo rapping in Malay.

Raining outside! Accompanied by Blackmore's Nights, in my unlit office, with a piping hot mug of Chinese tea - ah, perfect ambiance. Chatting with LL also. I have lots to do today, I need to make a list, but I'm just chilling a bit till... I don't know. Till I stop chilling I guess. Sambilewa! Sambilewa! Sambilewa!

I'm going out tonight with some Master's students, ladies' night, and tomorrow I'm going back to KL. I finally read something of Salman Rushdie yesterday (right after exam I went to the HSS library and borrowed an armful of fiction), Haroun and The Sea of Stories, and it was pretty good, I finished it by this morning.

I almost typed "today morning", which irritates the hell out of Kukui. Actually I had never thought that "today morning" was wrong until he pointed it out. I guess it's the language influence from Mandarin (今天早上), but then if you see it in Malay it is "pagi ini", which translates to "morning this". Morning this, bitch! (Was just testing if it sounded like an insult. It does.)

The next book up is Alan Bennett's The Clothes They Stood Up In and The Lady In The Van, a thin book of two stories, I started reading it a little already when on the loo, and it looks very promising indeed. The first story is about how this couple returns from the opera and find their flat stripped bare, like totally bare, of ALL of their possessions. The fur coats, the pie in the oven along with the oven, the toilet paper... everything. Then I ended my loo session, but I'm sure I will finish the book on the way back to KL.

Oh yeah, Chindi, Snow White and the Seven Samurai by Tom Holt was rather disappointing. I didn't like it much because I thought the storyline was rather chaotic and the theme wasn't very original, like it was trying to emulate The Matrix but with fairy tales. And not elegantly done too. Some details were clever and sometimes laugh-out-loud, but the overall plot was just too haphazardly thrown together. I finished the book but that was only because I had nothing else to do on the loo.

So anyway, a list of what I need to do today, so that it would inspire me to get off my lazy ass and start.
  1. Renew library books
  2. Get money from ATM
  3. Reply some emails
  4. Attend to one admin thing
  5. Print map to bus terminal back to KL
  6. Send a paper to my supervisors
  7. Laundry
  8. Pack my bag before going out tonight so I can party late and wake up at an ungodly hour of 7am tomorrow (only to be awfully early - but that's a better alternative to being late, given my extremely off the mark ability to estimate timing) to the bus station
So the month of May will be spent going to and fro KL and Singapore, I'm moving in my new place officially at 11th May (the last legal day I am permitted to stay in Graduate Hall), then go back KL again. Then at some point when I am tired of KL (T_T or when guilt motivates me to come back, more likely), stick around in Singapore till mid July when a crazy stretch of activities will be unleashed:
  • 13-17 July - Some Forum in Singapore (don't want people to end up here by googling)
  • 17-25 July - Indiaaaaaaaa
  • 27-31 July - Some Course in Singapore
  • August - Don't know if Boston conference will be on or not, if yes... nyehehehehe... crazy plans to be conceived later, but fingers crossed for the moment!! (waves away jinxes!!)
Coming up, to revise paper for submitting to Some Forum, and do extensive extensive extensive reading to buff up my theoretical foundation for my thesis, for I have no more coursework to fall back onto or blame, research work goes full speed ahead! Can't say I'm sorry about that though.

Also I have this craving for Penang food. I'm not talking about the Penang food in Canteen 2, which I have not stooped down to yet. A trip to Penang may be in order. O jiannnnnn.

I think I should probably end this post here. 2 hours later and I've still not done anything useful. Such is the life of a PhD student who has had the last test of her life.

Hail Penang!

I'm back in Malaysia, right now staying in Banana New Guesthouse in Penang =D Gonna stuff my face before dutifully returning to KL. Sunburnt, recovered from what is medically known as "busted knees", covered with bug bites, lugging a huge luggage of loot from Chatuchak!

Most random purchase: I bought a string of bobble lights, wahahaha! It's supposed to bring me light when I'm deep in dark depression in The Land of Fines.

It's been a glorious week. So many good things have happened, good moments, funny moments, and most of all, transportation moments! I've actually taken more than 10 different types of public transport in the past week =D Shall blog about them, shall put up pictures, shall not silently forget and move on to my next phase of travelling....

Which would be next Monday! Lalalala happy =D I have this really sticky Thai song stuck in my head. It's been there since my third day, in Kanchanaburi, and it's still here. I guess it's better than having the Homer Beer Song though. Or "Ring ring ring ring ring ring ring Banana Phone". Ah shit, by typing that I've installed it into my brain, probably in a loop for the next 24 hours. Damn.

And you know what other thing took 24 hours? The train from Bangkok to Butterworth! Can't believe we were stuck on a train for so long. But it was cool. Ended up sharing secrets with Asa across the aisle from the upper berths, thinking that we were secure with all the Thai speaking people around, but then this morning the guy sleeping below Asa's berth talked to us in Mandarin. =_= kena.

Oh well I need to go, Melissa Sim's gonna reach soon! Good Penang foooooooood.

Photos! Ipoh Taiping Penang.

This is me, on Day 1 of the trip with Guang Hong and YKent, at Ipoh, after having the original Oldtown White Coffee, against a bright orange stretch of wall, holding an auntie clutch purse and having the original Oldtown White Coffee stain on my shirt.

Random facts about Ipoh - ipoh is actually a poisonous plant, and the orang asli (indigenous people) use it in their darts. Also there's a widespread belief that girls from Ipoh are beautiful =D Hence the guys, throughout our short stop in Ipoh couldn't stop scanning the crowd for pretty girls.

And this is at the Ipoh Railway station, a really old building with an old hotel and an old lift which is like 100 years old. GH and I went up the lift, but YKent was too chicken to. Here's a golden Indian temple beside the railway station. The railway station has been refurbished and looks very modern, compared to the hotel.

After Ipoh, we went to Kellie's Castle, I've already blogged a bit about it in the previous post (on pretending to be a classic bike biker and not paying for the entrance fee), so the following two pictures are on Kellie's Castle:

And these three are of the Lake Gardens of Taiping. Very nice and tranquil. Good for dating, as you can see.

And looky here, of a photo of legs of me and He Who Declines To Be Named.

In Penang we visited the Tropical Spice Garden.
The Spices.
The Cool Grasshopper.
More coming up.

Ipoh Taiping and Penang

Two more hours till my birthday ends. So far most wishes have been through sms, and my phone has been acting up by an occasionally malfunctioning joystick.

I'm at a cybercafe now, right across Banana New Guest House where I'm staying. The place itself is alright, for the price we're paying (RM45 per room per night) I'm not complaining. We're staying in a triple room, with a double bed and a single bed. The room is very dimly lit with the windows sealed, but it is airconditioned and everything looks clean in the dim lighting. Toilet's relatively clean though it's perpetually wet since the shower is for some reason put in close proximity with the toilet bowl. And it's really noisy at night because our room happens to be right beside the road, but since we're all really tired at night we don't really mind. Walls are paper thin and someone kept knocking my side of the wall last night.

Yesterday we set off at 7am, stopped by Ipoh for the real white coffee and went to Kellie's Castle to have a look at the ruins. Coincidentally the Malaysia International Classic Bike Festival (or something like that) was held in Kellie's Castle, so we just blended into the crowd and didn't pay the entry fees =P Some bikes were really impressive btw, there was one that was number-plated 1920, didn't even have alphabets in front, so it should be like, the 1920th vehicle that got a license plate in Malaysia. Cool.

Then after that we went to the Lake Gardens in Taiping, which is wonderful really, very well-maintained and litter was virtually inexistent, which is quite something when you look at tourist attractions in Malaysia. We did pick up a couple of plastic bags but that's all. The Lake was originally a tin mine, then it was the first recreational park to be developed in Malaysia, even before the 1900s I think.

My uncle recommended a sotong bakar + tomyam stall in Kamunting, opposite Regimen 3, but we couldn't find it. So we headed straight for Penang, where all the good food is anyway.

Met up with Melissa Sim and all was good. We went to the Tropical Spice Garden (relatively new, I think less than 3 years old) today, got a wonderful guide named Choo who was equally happy about our attentiveness that he gave us a super long tour, twice as long as what the tour was supposed to be. He's a crazy nature lover who got a degree in Electrical Engineering but ended up being a nature guide at the end. Travelled to all sorts of places, and even been in the army before. Crazy. The Spice Garden was nice. If you ever travel there, look for Choo as a guide.

Next stop is Kota Bharu, I'm looking forward to seeing the Temenggor Dam tomorrow. YKent is sick, hope that he'll be fine tomorrow. Too much heaty food in Penang and he's been driving almost the whole journey, poor lad. So probably Guang Hong or me will take over driving tomorrow, to KB.

I love Penang and why.

Morning mist along the highway, somewhere around Ipoh

I'm back from my gastronomical marathon in Penang. It was a two-day road trip, with the sole purpose of stuffing our deprived guts with as much good food as possible.

Ahh. *rubs protruding belly* I miss it already. When are we going back?

Penang people and their food never cease to amaze me. We'd drive along the streets and Mel Sim would just point to an unassuming hawker stall with only two tables and say, "This stall sells really good [insert food name]." Penangites appear to keep a (long) mental list of eating specific food at specific places. Mel Sim planned our itinerary and path along the nice makan places (stop here to eat chee cheong fun, then next stop at around Komtar for cendol, ...), even factoring in a walk in the mall to digest the food before the next session of food-guzzling.

I love Mel Sim. I dedicate this paragraph to her. Mwahhhh!!!

Which brings me to the point - Penangites are so friendly! I don't see why some people insist on thinking that they're calculative and selfish. All the Penangites that I know are really nice and very direct, so there's no miscommunication involved. And their Hokkien! I met an Indian lady whose Hokkien is better than myself, of Hokkien descent. So shameful lah. *hides face*

Back to food. Good food commands respect in Penang. A famous char kuey tiao stall in Lorong Selamat charges a whopping RM5.50 for one plate, does not bring food to your table and makes you line up under the blazing sun to retrieve your plate. The sight of the waiting line of people wiping their brows meekly convinces you that the char kuey tiao is that good. It is! *salivates*

Another case in point is this lone stall beside the road selling deep fried "ni kueh", nian gao in Mandarin. A man parked his Mercedes by the roadside, crossed the road and took his place at the end of the queue. I don't see Mercedes-laden men in KL doing that. (Would be hell easier to meet one if they did.)

The said ni-kueh stall

Penang drivers. My friend PL from Penang is a state biker (context: bicycles) and he drives like he's navigating on his bike. Point is, many Penangites drive like that. And due to the scarcity of parking spaces, they're whizzes at side parking. Mel Sim even queried if our driver is good in side parking before he came. (He is. Incidentally he aces at return parking as well.) Penang motorcyclists are also a bunch of cocky lot as they tend to swerve in from nowhere then hog the whole road. The car drivers are surprisingly tolerant of the motorcyclists. (Maybe because my limited sample size consists of drivers who are also motorcyclists themselves)

Shopping. Heh heh heh heh. I broke my oath of no more shoe shopping and here's the Arnold Palmer pair of flats that I got. I think it's discounted but not very sure. Guilty sikit. =P

And this is my prized catch! Behold, a sliver of my childhood memories in the full 38 series of Ranma 1/2, by Rumiko Takahashi (translated into Chinese of course). Check out the panda bears on the spines of the books! *sighs in happiness*

Didn't take any food pictures. Too busy eating to do so. Here's a picture of sunrise in Penang to compensate. Mel Sim and Mel Tan took it while I was busy sleeping in the apartment.

The sunrise that I didn't see

I love Penang. =D
