-47: Birthday.

I turn 27 today. Wheeee!

Shoes = No Shoes

So I bought my hiking shoes yesterday, from Timberland. Good stuff, waterproof and all, and half off.

This morning I decided to break in the shoes, so I wore them to office. I'm in the office now. The back of my ankle is already blistered, and a piece of skin just fell off. OK I was being dramatic, a piece of skin is still dangling by a thread to the motherskin. I am looking at my ankle in disbelief and I realize that by the time I get up to Mount Santubong you'd probably be able to see the bone.

The good news is, my mum had this problem with her hiking shoes before, and apparently the shoe bite can be easily rectified by buying thicker socks, which I obviously have to. The bad news is, it's 9:36am in the morning and I have a whole day in front of me, including going out tonight, and there's no way I'll be able to wear my shoes the whole day. My wise dad once said that I should never wait till I have blisters to wear thick socks. Actually he said that yesterday. Crazy prophetic skills.

Anyway, I can't wear the shoes. I have class at 11am and I have loads of other errands to run such as getting money from ATM, buying a thumbdrive, paying my phone bill and etc. That's a lot of walking to do. I can't wear the shoes before I get said thick socks. There is only one solution - I'll have to go barefoot today. (And I'm secretly gleeful about that.) I'm actually quite decently dressed up today, because I'm going to Clarke Quay to celebrate Jen Hui's birthday

*SAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JEN HUI*

but I have on long jeans that will hide my shoe-less situation quite well. I'll just have to be extra careful with crazy stilettos out to get me. Hopefully I'll have time to go home before going out, to change into comfortable shoes.

In other news, my Canadian CSer Tony sent me a gift from Canada, it's a book, by Haruki Murakami. I'm happy =) I also had a great time picking out Jen Hui's gift yesterday evening, and I need to send out Kasia's package in time for her to get it before she leaves to Turkey ('coz it'll be too late if I send it after I get back from Kuching). It's the season of giving! And I get to not wear shoes today, yay!

[Insert CNY-related title]

[Insert something festive]

[Insert something red]

[Insert something about finding a leaking jar of vegetarian sambal from the last trip home that I had forgotten in my backpack and that had stained my readings orange][It was tragic]

[Insert CNY cookies that I have not been able to get my paws away from]

[Insert an obligatory "nomnomnom" because I'm a hip and cool Malaysian blogger whose age wants to defy gravity]

[Insert thoughts about why that is not going to happen][Because age is an abstract definitive concept that we can measure fairly accurately using quantitative methods - eat that, Blumer - that gravity has no influence over - eat that, Newton][Except for certain body parts][Oh no]

[Insert extremely hot tropical CNY weather][I am melting]

[Insert the Fibonacci sequence again][0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13...][This is the only sequence that I know]

[Insert floppy disks hahahaha have any of you watched "Hackers" which has Angelina Jolie starring in it?][I love pre-Y2K technology-related apocalypses][Cutting edge 3 1/2in floppy disks yo][People used to use magnetic tapes ok]

[Insert CNY songs][Mandarins][Angpao*][I am rich!][Oh yeah][Divide by 5=amount in Euro][Anti-climax][It's about the love, not the money][Oh yeah]

[Happy Chinese New Year to all =]]

*[Insert footnote: red packets filled with money given to children during Chinese New Year. Also useful to humiliate single people because only married people get to give out angpaos. Muahahaha! Probably invented by spinsters to con money in the old days. Suckers. End footnote.]

Pointless Pre-Packing Procrastination Post

(PPPPP)

Need to stuff all the loose ends on my bed into my trusty backpack which is virtually empty. I'm leaving home in an hour, leaving KL in five. I'm kinda wistful for I won't be home till at least 6 weeks later, but I gotta do what I gotta do. And at least I'm going back to a place that I regard as home as well, albeit a home that needs vigorous cleaning tomorrow. Last year I spent FIVE months living out of boxes and my luggage. That I have a beautiful place to go home to is much to be grateful about.

The past two weeks have been really great. Met all my best friends - someone asked me, how can you have so many "best" friends? Is that even grammatically correct? Well, they just are. And why they're my best friends is because all of them understand me, support me, and make me a better person. I love you all very much!

The six weeks I have ahead, before Chinese New Year, is going to be intense. Nine CSers are coming. I need to come up with some substantial leads in my research to be able to make my confirmation report on time, I need to do my duties for the university, I'm sitting in two classes, and I've already outlined a number of books that I need to read. In short I will be very busy. But in a good way.

Need to turn off my laptop because it's the first thing that goes into my backpack. Oh Happy New Year to all. It's going to be a great year, I can feel it =)

May the Fourth Be With You

Wikipedia says today's Star Wars Day. For twenty six years, May the Fourth has also been Jun-E Day. I was born approximately 9490 yesterdays ago. That's not counting the leap years 'coz I'm lazy like that. In approximately a year and a 145 days later I will be 10,000 days old.

Here's to thousands more tomorrows.

Wish I had a beer now.

She is a peacock in everything but beauty.

Ah what a delightful insult, such room for imagination! Oscar Wilde is a genius.

I am back in The Land As Big As Lake Kenyir. Homesickness struck last night but I am back to my old indestructible self now. Am focusing full time (kinda) on my work, this paper has to be out by this week I swear, so that I can work on other papers in the pipeline. Just found a good paper so I am sprightly.

Chinese New Year found me coughing and hacking and not having any CNY tidbits, which is a horrid pity because that's reasonably the only time of the year when you get to have all the junkfood you can eat without the guilt, and I'd already missed it last year because I was in NZ. Ten thousand woes. Well there's always next year.

The lack of real food was supplemented by soul food. During the holidays I read Picture of Dorian Gray (Oscar Wilde) and half of Emma (Jane Austen), which is still my loo-time reading now. Hooray for books you bought when you were young but never appreciated because when you get old and contemplative and boring you're bound to like them somehow. I suppose classics are classics for a reason. I still can't bring myself to read Great Expectations though. I think just by holding the book my cool factor would degrade by ten. Maybe another five years down the road. In the meantime I shall hunt down more of Oscar Wilde's books, I find his flamboyance really delightful and Jane Austen just pales in comparison.

Also I saw 2046 by Wong Kar Wai and I liked it. I liked the ambience, the storyline, and of course Tony Leung who was in it. I didn't like Happy Together (by same director) ten years ago when I saw it. Maybe I should rewatch it with my older, more contemplative and more boring soul.

Sharing with you this music video of "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz. Love the travel vibes it's sending. My thoughts go out to Val who's right now wwoofing in Italy, lucky bastard, wish I could do the same but I shall keep focused and continue trying to get funding to travel.

OK back to academic reading, cool stuff on media and conflict.

I'm a hip and happening person.

I'm a hip and happening person.
I'm a hip and happening person.
I'm a hip and happening person.

Perhaps if I said it often enough, it might come true. But at the meantime I am still crouched in front of my computer, listening to the distant cries of Happy New Year and firework crackles, blogging the first post of Year 2009. Also watching some HK dramas at the side, and applying Mopiko onto my mosquito bites. I think I've been spoiled by Singaporean mosquitoes. Su Lin says that Singaporean mosquito bites are not as potent as Malaysian ones. I didn't believe her till I got these bites at Bukit Tinggi and one of them swelled up to the size of my palm o_O Hail the formidable Malaysian mosquitoes!

2009 so far has been... er... uneventful.

The new year resolution last year was to write a travel book, which obviously did not happen. I did a fair bit of travelling though. New year last year was celebrated at Picton, together with Robert, Val, Marten, Lyla and Kaisa. Came back from NZ end of March. Travelled with YKent and Guang Hong on a road trip around Peninsular Malaysia early May; with Asa to Thailand mid June; with Val around Peninsular Malaysia again in July. Met Robert in Malacca right before starting my term in Singapore in August. Slogged through coursework, bought an impulse ticket to KK, went to KK with Jia Ling end of November.

Second day, 11 hours into 2009.

I suppose I should put down some new resolutions. The less I have, the less I break, so I guess this year I only have two: One is to keep track of my finances, which so far I have left to the Gods, and to not look at my bank account balance. So, umh, after coming back from KK, I have no idea how much money I actually have. That's probably not what they teach you at Personal Finance 101.

Second one is to travel out of the Asia Pacific region. This I have some plans for, fingers crossed, hopefully this year I'll be able to finish my research proposal and pave the path for more travelling, a.k.a. time out of Singapore, the Christchurch of er... the Southeast Asian region. Yeah insider joke that insiders themselves might not understand. Moving on.

Oh well I'm going out with Woei in a minute and have to prepare. OK one more resolution - I'm going to try my best to be happy in 2009.

To the loo!

Ahem.

I just noticed that I had forgotten three people's birthdays in a row. Three very old friends (25! Wahey!), very dear to my heart - two of whom read my blog and one who doesn't. All Scorpios.

Paiseh!!!!!

Ling, Woei and YY, happy birthday!!!

Sorry this isn't much of a birthday post - photocopying the whole day made me want to kill myself and I am exhausted from all the restraint. But happy birthday and have a great year ahead of you nonetheless!

Such a beautiful night

It's raining torrents out there. I'm going to snuggle under covers and have a good night with dreams of waterfalls. To my Muslim readers, Selamat Hari Raya =)

I hope my dad doesn't read my blog.

My dad's the world's greatest, coolest, bestest dad!!! Happy Father's Day!

And I love you too, mum (also world's greatest, coolest and bestest)!!!

Regular postings coming up, hopefully before I go to Bangkok, which is on this Wednesday. (So, regular also regular two days only =P) I probably will put up a post complaining about packing like I do every time anyway. Or I may jinx that post by announcing it here, like I always do as well! Oh the suspense...

I was super disoriented for the past week, life's good, went to a media forum for two days and rediscovered pool and cycling. LL's back, Val's in Oz now, Asa's back in Gothenburg and we shall meet in less than 3 days =D Exciting times ahead!

Gong Xi Fa Cai!

Means: I wish you prosperity!

Life is good right now, have begun a career of freeloading and am enjoying every moment of it. I guess it reinforces the faith in humankind - that there are people who are genuinely kind, willing to share what they have with no hidden agenda.

Right now we have with us the backdoor key of a stranger that we met through hitchhiking - and we have stayed in their house for two nights now and will only leave tomorrow. It's a really amazing feeling to be welcomed like that. We cook and wash dishes for them as return, but I don't think I can ever repay them for their kindness, unless they come to Malaysia where I'll host them then.

By the way, "we" is me and Valentin, my German Greenpeace ex-colleague. We are currently travelling together. The alliance is symbiotic - Val cooks, I wash; he provides security when hitchhiking and I convince potential rides that we're not creeps - and it's comfortable travelling with someone that you've known for a while without having to get used to people's quirks. He also shares a similar level of impulsiveness and restraint with me, so we get along pretty well with planning a little and stumbling the rest of the way.

Well, happy Chinese New Year to all, have fun and get lots of angpau!

Dear Readers,

I extend to you a sincere and heartfelt apology about an editorial error in the previous post, where I mistook the popular saying "Sweet as, bro" for "Sweet ass, bro".

To my defense, "sweet ass, bro" is more sound grammatically and logically, with a cheeky ring which urges common usage. "Sweet as" is a cliffhanger though (Sweet as sugar. Sweet as a girl. Sweet as my itsy bitsy teeny weenie yellow polka dot bikini.), and NZlanders are suckers for hanging off cliffs.

And happy Deepavali you guys!!!!! Why NZ no public holiday!!!

Over and out.

Dear Malaysia,

Happy Independence, I feel inclined to say to you, just 50 minutes past 12am and we're officially into 31st August 2007, 50th Anniversary of our Independence.

I feel like saying it wistfully, tenderly and softly. I'm all for yelling Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! but now does not seem to be the time to do it; instead I would just like to quietly reflect upon my 24 years of existence in an independent state. I'd like to say thank you for a change. Heartfelt gratitude, none of those cynical crap like Yeah, thanks a lot for nothing.

Firstly, I'm thankful to have a decent place to live in, a roof over my head, food on my plate, and broadband that provides me endless entertainment. Thank you also, for being a country of few natural disasters and for having warm weather all year around. Thanks for bringing together our brothers and sisters of different ethnicity, and teaching us to live and love together. Thanks for providing me the basic education to be built upon, to shape me into what I am today.

Sometimes it's easy to take for granted what you have given us, but I am always jolted back to counting my blessings when I witness hardships of others in other countries, of poverty, of war, of natural disasters.

I realize that we still have a long way to go. I realize that you're not perfect, but so is every other country. I realize that in order to make you better, I need to have a better understanding of why you became what you are today, and how we can make you better tomorrow. The heartache in me will fuel my endeavours to make you a better place for many more generations to live in, to love you for who you are, and not hate you for who some people want to shape you to be.

Happy Merdeka =)

Love,
A Malaysian Citizen
