I am home. It's fantastic. My eyes are half open/half closed, depending if you're an optimist, but I will ramble a little bit because I haven't felt so free and unrepressed in a while. Yes I brought some sheets of writing back to collate. And yes I can't be arsed to do it now.
It's great to be back in KL. The last time I was back was during Chinese New Year. Since then I've been hit by wave after wave of work, and if I didn't come back this time, the next time would be three months later, after my Europe trip and the confirmation defense. Asa would already be in Brisbane. I would already be different, as all my long travel stints tend to change me substantially in one way or another. In New Zealand I started hitchhiking. In the States I became a vegetarian. I wonder what Europe would have in store for my ongoing evolution.
Speaking of Europe, Val's going to be there when I go! He quitted Australia and is probably on his way back on a plane right this moment. I got the news when I was in depths of despair with some concepts that refused to work, and I only glanced very absently at the text that came in, from a number that I didn't recognize. The next second I was laughing and waving my cell phone and jumping around in the office and poking Kristy.
It's going to be so awesome, I anticipate a lot of beer-guzzling and German-spotting. (He's German. She's German. That dog's German too. How does he do that??) And we'll see Marten again and reminisce over the good old days, and come up with new running gags, because that's what we do. (But the whales! Think about the whales!)
I've also confirmed a detour from Paris to Strasbourg to see Linda. The train tickets that she booked for me (you get cheaper tickets if you buy from the official site and of course it had to be in French) only cost 55Euros both ways so it's not too bad. I'm really looking forward to seeing her again, and being shown around by a local and staying with her family.
So much about Europe. I haven't had time to plan the actual things to do at all although I know I should. But writing has taken up most of my time, and will continue to occupy me until the 11th hour, I think. The only thing that I really need to do is to plan on how to fit my entire wardrobe for 2 months, my toiletries, my sleeping bag, a netbook (which I have yet to acquire) and miscellaneous stuff (flip flops for example) into my trusty 32litre backpack, under 10kg. That means that every item that goes into the bag has to be essential, and versatile in usage, and I probably can't buy anything on the way. Of course the other option is to post stuff back home whenever my pack gets too crazy full. I've a feeling that I'll use this option at least once, to send my formal clothes back after the conference is done. Speaking of which, I haven't prepared for my presentation! Rats.
Anyway, I should go now, a long day ahead tomorrow to run various errands. I leave you with Sufjan Stevens who's playing a part in keeping me sane in these incredibly stressful times.

Pointless Pre-Packing Procrastination Post
(PPPPP)
Need to stuff all the loose ends on my bed into my trusty backpack which is virtually empty. I'm leaving home in an hour, leaving KL in five. I'm kinda wistful for I won't be home till at least 6 weeks later, but I gotta do what I gotta do. And at least I'm going back to a place that I regard as home as well, albeit a home that needs vigorous cleaning tomorrow. Last year I spent FIVE months living out of boxes and my luggage. That I have a beautiful place to go home to is much to be grateful about.
The past two weeks have been really great. Met all my best friends - someone asked me, how can you have so many "best" friends? Is that even grammatically correct? Well, they just are. And why they're my best friends is because all of them understand me, support me, and make me a better person. I love you all very much!
The six weeks I have ahead, before Chinese New Year, is going to be intense. Nine CSers are coming. I need to come up with some substantial leads in my research to be able to make my confirmation report on time, I need to do my duties for the university, I'm sitting in two classes, and I've already outlined a number of books that I need to read. In short I will be very busy. But in a good way.
Need to turn off my laptop because it's the first thing that goes into my backpack. Oh Happy New Year to all. It's going to be a great year, I can feel it =)

The morning after.
I am back in my room in KL.
The past few days have been a crazy whoosh. It's one of those periods of time when things move so quickly, it's like you're in a corridor with a slippery floor and someone gives you a push and you slide, frictionless, bouncing from one wall to the other in a zigzag fashion. Sometimes you note the wallpaper and a painting or two or bump your knee against the teak furniture (of course it has to be teak!), but you never really have time to reflect upon what actually happened, because everything's just too fast-moving and you don't have time to grab onto a rail that doesn't exist anyway to stop all the movement.
The crazy sliding has stopped. I hang onto a door knob or something, dazed, sleep-deprived, unsure whether I prefer motion or stillness. I remember Asa, LL, Woei, YJ, Silver, my primary school friends. I remember a dinner, a failed attempt to watch some Yasmin Ahmad movies, a visit to the Islamic Art Museum, sleeping on a really comfortable bed in Malacca. I remember being early for my bus, Silver missing his, forgetting my (new) hand phone and getting it back, awkward social situations, sleeping. Waking up very reluctantly. Sleeping. Waking up even more reluctantly. Sleeping. Don't. Want. To. Wake. Up.
I just got a paper cut on my middle toe. I shall not furnish you with the details.
I should go to bed, I really should. Did I mention I really need sleep?
//I fell asleep promptly after the last line, although I'm sure I had some thought-provoking sentiments about sleep deprivation to share. But here's posting it in the morning after.

Two consecutive posts! I am on fire!
For those who are concerned about my depression and state of hunger, I have recovered and am now in a happy blogging mood. The mood swing that is my life, and the wonders of mediocre hawker food.
Different aspects of my life have also improved for the better - for instance, I'm going home today, woohoo!! This is totally unplanned, and I'm only going home because Tan Kuan Sheng was selling his bus ticket off, so I thought what the heck and took it. So I'm going to be home for the long Raya weekend =D
Put me and Asa together in a chatroom and we'll be up to no good - we decided yesterday that we will go for a roadtrip to the east coast this weekend, and do some camping along the beach! We are going to find some random nice beach, set up my four season tent, barbecue vegetables and burn marshmallows. It's going to be great.
And with regards to homelessness, I have found two housemates to share a house, so the remaining problem is just to get a place. It is rather cool to be able to rent a whole place and not having to take any shit from existing people who live there. I'm already fantasizing about the freedom that I will be able to have. *stares dreamily into space*
Also, I had the most invigorating discussion with my supervisor yesterday. He knows where I'm coming from, what motivates me and what my research needs - and he's prepared to support me in the mad schemes that I am already starting to devise. He even encourages the mad schemes. Quote from him: "we wouldn't want that to get in the way of your travelling", and I assure you that he meant no sarcasm at all. At some point I was so overwhelmed by his coolness that I blurted out, "you're the coolest supervisor, ever!" and I meant every syllable of it.
So yeah, life has been great, and the emails this morning from Robert and a Singaporean girl that I met in the Burning Man are cherries on top. Hugs to Val whom I miss, to LL whose email I have yet to reply, and to the peeps in KL I AM REACHING TONIGHT, and to all the wonderful people I met in the States and are actually taking the trouble to read my blog - I love and miss all of you.
*hops away in hyper happy mode*

Exceedingly tired, I am.
Settled down at Jia Ling's finally, this past week has been such a blur of activities that if you ask me what I had been doing, I can't give you a straightforward answer. Seriously. I'm actually pondering this question while my fingers hover over my keyboard.
Blankness.
Let's see. After a couple of days of packing, reached KL on Wednesday morning. Met Asa. Dropped our India visa application. Had lunch. Did my hair. Met up with LL. Stayed overnight at her place with Asa, had deep conversation with alcohol and crackers. For a moment I was disoriented and wondered where I was. Then I saw 8tv on the TV. I was in KL with two of my best friends whom I had not seen for at least a year. Slept around 4am.
Thursday morning. After breakfast we went to Mid Valley to do some functional shopping. Functional shopping is good because I tend to buy stuff efficiently. Bought items for desert camping, shoes for conference (which hurt my feet, damnit), and some other stuff. Really can't remember what I acquired. After that Mum picked me and Asa up. Went to get an ISIC card. Picked up India visa. Bade byebye to Asa. Went to find XiaoCi. Had dinner with XiaoCi and her family.
Friday morning. Woke up. Met my aunt back from NZ. Lunch. Organic shop. Got clip-on sunglasses. Went to Bukit Tinggi to get camping mat. Had fun setting up a tent in our Bkt Tinggi apartment. Went home. Helped sister to cook mushroom soup, shepherd's pie and failed chocolate fondue. Helped my dad mend my torn clothes. Oh yeah my dad has also sewed a Malaysian flag on my Deuter bag. *heart* By the time I was free it was 1am.
Saturday morning. Supposed to go see the doc to get some pills in preparation for India, but failed to wake up. When I woke up my parents had already gone out, and they went to the clinic for me T_T. Went to the KTM to pick Asa up. Reached Plaza Mont Kiara to meet YJ. Nonstop laughter, good conversation. Went for Yu Jin's birthday steamboat dinner. Then to my aunt's house where they played mahjong. Reached home around 12am. Started to pack all the stuff to come back to Singapore. Slept at 3:30am.
Sunday morning. Left KL with parents. Managed to move everything to Jia Ling's place around 10:30pm. Tried to do presentation slides for my presentation on Wednesday. Put in headers for all the slides and collapsed around 12:30am.
Today. Wake up at 6:30am. Leave Jia Ling's house at 7am. Get lost, get shoe bitten, get to the grad forum. Drink 3 cups of coffee. Manage to limp home before 6pm so that Jia Ling could leave house and the keys with me.
Now. Now. Now what ah?
No point to this post but don't care lah. Numbness.

Food and interviews and illustration of how I bruised my ankle.
I am the expanded belly talking.
Tonight I had steamboat with YKent, after that came home and observed Earth Hour (was 15 minutes late, so I started at 8:45 and ended at 9:45), had a pack of roda crackers, discovered that my mum had bought a box of snacks for me (weee!) and upon ransacking the box I had two mango flavoured jellies and a packet of garlic peas. Mum and dad came back and mum made me drink some bitter herbal stuff, which warranted another mango jelly. Sister came back with boyfriend, who brought some tubs of soya jelly topped with lychees, which I wolfed down because I wanted to be polite to the sister's boyfriend and also because I like jellies.
I am the expanded belly filled with jelly talking.
Interviews today went very well, I went to the Putra World Trade Centre where the Umno General Assembly was held and talked to two more editors. Bound by research ethics I can't reveal who I've talked to, but I've enjoyed every single interview that I have done for the past two days. Yeah transcribing's a bitch (why else would I be blogging now?) but meeting the people in the game, listening to their perspectives on the political situation in Malaysia and what it's like to be making editorial decisions, it's really fascinating. Also got the taste of the hustle and bustle in the Media Centre during the Umno General Assembly.
Tomorrow's Talentime Day! I am going with YJ. Super can't wait.
I also hurt my ankle today. I had the most engaging talk with one of the editors hence I was late for the appointment with YKent, so I had to run, and

ran full speed into a trolley which was also running full speed and we couldn't see each other because of the corner, as depicted in the above illustration. Ankle now has a fierce bruise, I don't think I twisted it or anything but it hurts. I am currently limping around the house.
OK tired already going to bed.

Ramblings.
Times like these I want to write and write and write but I don't really know what to write. For instance I could talk about my book launch yesterday, where only less than 30 people turned up, which was good for the butterflies in my stomach but not so good for the forum in general. I sat at the panel and felt secretly mischievous as the whole thing felt so much like a fake stage, a rehearsal, because of the empty hall. I looked at the people who came and wondered why they did. Not that I don't appreciate their attendance, I do. And then I remembered previously that I would also turn up for forums like these, just for the heck of it. So apparently yesterday the gods in charge of the just-for-the-heck-of-it lever to the world only dispensed a little of the good stuff so not many people came.
Weston. I wanted to blog about Weston so bloody much when I got back from KK. Then I was busy with the book launch speech, which was crap, and then Gayo my Filipino classmate from NTU came to visit and I got us gloriously lost in the labyrinth of Kuala Lumpur, and then I worked on the speech some more, and then I got lost in an awesome book called Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, by Jonathan Safran Foer. When I grow up I want to write just like him. And then there was the book launch. After that was now, and later I am going to the mall with Jen Hui to catch a movie, maybe Kinta, which is the first martial arts Malaysian film, or so I've heard. I'm also going to buy a set of PJs. That's because tonight I'm holding a pajamas party. Noone knows what's going to happen besides pajamas or lingerie (yeah right) are mandatory and it's going to be held at my house. As one of the hosts I am too lazy to ask the other host YJ what we plan to do. I don't think we're really good party throwers.
Wow, I just discovered this really neat feature of Google! I put in "Kinta", because I wanted to see the showtimes, and then there's this field that you get to put in your postcode. With much sceptism I put in 51200, my postcode, and was brought to this page, with all the showtimes of all the cinemas nearby! Batman is superbly impressed.
Tomorrow I'm leaving KL, going back to the Land of Queues in the evening. As much as I am reluctant to - and believe me I am very, very, very, (infinite loop) (break) reluctant to go back - I have to, because I am a good responsible adult and I have work to do, money to earn and travel plans to fund. I had this burning desire to travel and write a travel book again, yesterday. I hadn't had this desire for ages already. I mean, travel, yes, but to write about it, no. Good books inspire people to read, wonderful books inspire people to write.
Prof W says that I shouldn't take more than 3 years to finish my PhD, because I have the capacity to. Mum says that I should just take my time because my scholarship lasts 4 years anyway. I am undecided. But inclined towards 3 years. I think if I put my mind to it I will be able to do it. But what next then?
I should go. Jen Hui's waiting for me.

Still have to work.
Sigh. I have to surrender the PC to my sister in a minute, who needs to do her assignments, so there's no point in starting to blog about KK because I need more time for that.
I'm still feeling sickly, coughing up loads of phlegm and feeling some heat in my neck. The Indonesian remedy seems not to be working so far. In the meantime I need to write the speech for my book launch on Friday, do an article review and stop scratching my insect bites. I think the splinter still might be stuck in my foot, as sometimes when I accidentally walk on that part of my sole, a piercing pain shoots up and I end up limping again.
Blah. In a whiny mood now so I'll stop here, with a random photo from KK. This is a grasshopper handmade by our guide in Weston.

Just our luck.
I am back home, extremely exhausted, limping around because I cut my sole on some splinter in the hostel dorm bed, dripping blood on the hostel floor. When I got home, the wound had reopened, but hopefully it will be alright tomorrow morning. Also I am sniffling and have a sore throat and my period pounced on me on the flight back. And I've got itchy bites all over from bed bugs, mosquitoes and other biting insects. Physically I'm quite battered but mentally all is well, I'm back home with all the remedies for my bodily sores and fawning parents. =)
While I was reeling in the shock of being robbed, Jia Ling apparently lost her passport on the way back from LCCT to her home. After a frantic hour of searching and yelling at the bus operators she checked out the police division in KL Sentral. Extremely fortunately, someone had returned her passport to the police and she got it back.
What a pair of luckless (yet lucky) duo we are!

Soy un perdedor.
I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me...
Bloody bloody tired. And this song is stuck in my head. I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me... Came home on the train on Wednesday evening, did not sleep well, some baby was crying and then an alarm rang at freaking 5am I could have killed that guy. Reached KL at 6:30am, went with mum to FRIM at 9 for her morning walk, dentist appointment at 11:30am, finally saw the doc at 12:45noon, went shopping at 1U because of a power outage at home, jam jam jam like hell on the way back, had dinner with parents, had supper with YKent, slept at 1am, woke up this morning at 8, went with mum to FRIM again...
So why don't you kill me... Yeah I only know these two lines of the lyrics. My eyes are mere slits now, on the brink of falling asleep.
Pangs of pain get out of my head! Soy un perdedor I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me.
